Folding Octagonal Poker Table

How to build your very own folding, octagonal poker table!

Background

We play monthly games of poker with a group of 6 players (sometime more). Each month we take it in turn to host the poker night (put on food, snacks etc) so we each share the cost of having the poker night as well as the host being able to drink more without worrying about driving!

The current table we use is a China special! It's a standard oval table that folds in the middle to allow for slightly easier transportation. The table is of low quality and a reasonable amount of time has been spent on the table trying to make improvements etc. After viewing lots of how to build a poker table sites from www.homepokertourney.com, I decided to give it a go!

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a site that showed me how to make a folding table so I've had to grab bits from here and there and work most of it out myself much to my wife's horror!

What we were aiming for

This is what I was aiming for and Octagonal Poker table, with a padded rail, wooden race track and raised centre board. Unfortunately this site was no longer available to help with the design but was a good starting point. I decided to go for an Octagon shape because I think it's more social and each player has easy access to put their chips in the centre of the table not so easy when playing on the standard oval tables

Does size matter?

My wife (bless her) would say of course not but for a poker table it does! As the table needs to fold in half, I was limited by the size of the table legs I could get. Ultimately I would have made my table 1400mm * 1400mm square but the size of the legs available to me here in NZ were 730mm high which meant that when my table folds in half, it needed to be at least this width so the table legs didn't stick out once folded. With this constraint, the table was going to be 1600mm * 1600mm square when fully erect or 1600mm * 800mm when folded in half.
